Band of Companies to Support Military Spouses
AboutOne.com to Host “One Million for $1 Million” Fundraiser for Non-Profit Operation Shower
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania – November 17, 2010 – Often, when American military personnel are deployed, a spouse who is expecting a baby is left behind to prepare for a family in her husband’s absence. What should be a joyous occasion often becomes quite stressful. Listed as one of Babble.com’s “50 Best Charities for Babies and Small Children”, Operation Shower (http://operationshower.org) is a non-profit organization that honors the sacrifices military families make by producing and coordinating unit-wide baby showers for expecting military families in a deployment or high stress situation. Moms and dads receive gift boxes filled with baby supplies, clothing, toys, books, and much more.
Since its inception in 2007, the organization has showered over 400 women and hosted 12 unit-wide showers on military bases across the country for the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and National Guard. According to Chief Shower Officer, LeAnn Morrissey, “We are grateful for the opportunity to support military families by hosting unique baby showers and providing a shared experience as well as products and services to make life easier for these moms.” The charity’s long-term goal is to reach every military base in the nation. With that in mind, Morrissey has developed Operation Give Thanks, a nationwide fundraising campaign to help OperationShower meet this goal and ease the burden of deployment for military families.
Enter AboutOne.com, an award-winning online service with strong philanthropic principles. Joanne Lang, AboutOne’s CEO, first learned about Operation Shower when she travelled to Washington, DC in October to help with the shower held at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. She was so moved by what Morrissey’s organization had accomplished there that she was determined to find a way to provide more significant support. According to Lang, “Operation Shower’s mission fits well with AboutOne’s philanthropic guiding principle, which is why we are honored and proud to take part in these showers. We feel it’s important to thank all military personnel and their spouses for the sacrifices and contributions they and their families make.”
Lang then worked with the AboutOne team to develop the “One Million for $1 Million” Twitter party, billing it as the “World’s Biggest Twitter Party in Support of United States Military Families and Operation Shower.” To accomplish this goal, she has enlisted the support of a variety of popular social media figures, including OpenSky Chief Social Marketing Officer Ted Rubin. Armed with an impressive list of prizes, including a Kindle, an iPad, three months of Huggies diapers and a Huggies-branded Flip video camera, a Build-A-Bear Workshop gift, an Aprica stroller, and more, Lang hopes to entice large numbers of Twitterers to donate money to Operation Shower and attend her #OGT Twitter Party at 9pm EST on December 2nd. “Joining our Twitter party and Supporting Operation Shower with a small donation is a wonderful way to express your gratitude and thanks at this special time of year – and have a little fun,” says Lang.
Lang and Morrissey hope to make a difference in the lives of American military heroes and their families, and perhaps make a little Twitter history along the way. The portal to the One Million for $1 Million site (http://aboutone.com) will provide information on the party agenda and prizes, as well as “tweeting for newbies” videos and instructions.
“Operation Shower is delighted to work with Aboutone.com,” says Morrissey. “We value AboutOne’s involvement and their generous donations, and are thrilled to have their continued support.”
